The 25th of April marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by both Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC Day is recognized by both Australians and New Zealanders as a day of remembrance, commemorative services are held across Australia at dawn and later in the day former servicemen and servicewomen meet to take part in marches through Australia’s major cities.
Since 1916 ANZAC Day has been commemorated through parades, dawn services and community get-togethers. We have found some suggestions for this year’s ANZAC Day events that will help you to pay your respects and mark this important occasion for all the men and women to have given, and who continue to give so much of their lives for this nation.
The ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee will be holding its traditional ANZAC Day Daw Service at the Shrine of Remembrance, ANZAC Square on Tuesday the 25th April. The ceremony begins at 4.28am to mark the time of the original Gallipoli landings. It’s recommended you arrive at the service before 4am so you can get a good vantage point for the Dawn Service, there will also be big screens located in and around ANZAC Square, post Office Square, King George Square and Queen Street Mall.
ANZAC Day Parade
This year’s ANZAC Day Parade is from 10am – 1pm on Tuesday the 25th April at the corner of Adelaide Street and George Street in Brisbane City. The Parade has been a part of Brisbane’s ANZAC Day since the 1920s and honours former and current servicemen and women and their descendants.
RSL ANZAC Day Services
Dawn Services will be held at many local RSL branches throughout Brisbane and it’s surround suburbs. They will be holding their own local services, marches and events, and some will feature guest speakers and offer post service breakfasts. ANZAC Day Service with The Victoria Barracks Historical Society
A Dawn Service will be held at the Australian Legion Memorial Club by the Victoria Barracks Historical Society at 5am on the 25th of April. The service will commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC and all wars since. Following the Dawn Service will be a Gunfire breakfast inside the Australia Legion Memorial Club and after breakfast the Queensland Military Memorial Museum will be opened for viewing.
The ANZAC Day Student Service
This ceremony is conducted every year in ANZAC Square on the 24th of April prior to ANZAC Day running from 10am till noon. It involves hundreds of South-Eastern Queensland primary and secondary schools that will meet at the Shrine of Remembrance for this solemn service.
