Let’s face it, a house move is never something people look forward to -there’s just so much to do between cleaning, organising and packing everything. Make your move easier by thinking ahead, packing ahead and creating a positive and organised moving system. This way, your transition into a new home will be much easier and more efficient.
Start packing ahead of time
While this may seem obvious, it can be quite difficult to do. A few weeks before the move, start sorting through things and packing the items you don’t use frequently or won’t need to use again for a short while. Some examples of these things could be sporting equipment, games or holiday decorations. Special items such as photo albums, trophies, and knick-knacks can also be packs away ahead of time. This can also be an easy way to go through your wardrobes and get rid of any old items that you would rather donate or trash than take to your new home.
Sort by rooms
This will make unpacking easier when you get to your new home. Start sorting and packing one room at a time, packing the smaller items first to get them out of the way. By sorting by what rooms the items are going into, this makes things easier for you and for those helping you move as you will know where the boxes need to go when you’re moving into your new place.
Get each member of the family to pack a bag with a few essentials in it. Thing such as toiletries, toothbrushes, Pyjama, things to keep children entertained, and a couple changes of clothes to easily have on hand the day of the move. This saves you from having to search through boxes before the move.
Keep what you need accessible
It’s a great idea to pack items that you won’t be needing in the first few weeks after you move first. Things that you will be needing right away in your new home should be packed away into the same box or boxes and labelled for quick and easy access. Things such as plates, cutlery, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies will need to be unboxed right away in your new home.
Label your boxes
Figure out a system for labelling your boxes and suitcases. If everything is packed into boxes, you can simply write on them with a permanent marker. Your labelling system can be as simple or as organised as you like, depending on what you find easier.
It’s great to have a lot of help and support when moving, but having too many people can cause a bit of chaos. By delegating tasks to each person such as packing, cleaning and overseeing tasks, you can keep all the craziness to a minimum.
If it’s in your budget, you can completely remove yourself from the equation altogether. Many removal businesses also offer packing services too, with the bonus that if they are the ones packing your stuff they are also responsible for the condition that your items arrive in!
Making your move as stress-free for you and your family as possible.
